After 28 years serving New Zealand in the Army, both at home and overseas, Matthew has seen more of the world than most. He trained military personnel on combat vehicles, worked as a Security Consultant in Iraq and Kurdistan teaching drivers to operate armoured vehicles in some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable. But when it came time to choose where to be, Matthew chose home. He chose Whanganui. He chose his five daughters and four grandchildren. When Matthew sits beside you in that car, you're not just getting a driving instructor. In 2023 Matthew obtained his Driver Instructor endorsement and took over MDT Driver Training not to build an empire, but to give back to the community that has always meant everything to him.

ACC & Specialist Funded Driver Training

Every person who gets in Matthew's car is treated as an individual, never a number, never a case file. For clients referred through ACC, OTRS, or other specialist funding bodies, Matthew takes the time to truly understand each person's needs, hidden disabilities, or injury-related requirements. Every session includes additional preparation, detailed progress reporting, and full administration, all invoiced directly to the funding organisation. Because your journey back to driving deserves nothing less than genuine care.

🚗 When are lessons available?

Lessons are available Monday to Friday, starting from 8:00 am, with the last lesson beginning at 5:00 pm. For Saturday and Sunday sessions, please give us a call to check availability spaces are limited and fill up fast! 📅 Public Holidays: We’re closed so everyone can enjoy a well-deserved break.

🚗 Who can book a driving lesson?

Our lessons are available for Class 1, 1L, and 1R licence holders (car licences). To take lessons, you’ll need to have at least a Learner Licence (1L) before getting behind the wheel. If you’re just starting your driving journey, we’re here to help you begin confidently and safely once you’ve got your licence.

🚗 Where do lessons start from?

For Learner Licence drivers, lessons usually begin at your chosen pickup location. If you hold a Restricted Licence, lessons typically start from VTNZ Whanganui. Matt chooses the best starting point based on your confidence and experience level, ensuring each lesson takes place on safe, suitable roads. Every session is designed to help you feel relaxed, supported, and ready to build real world driving skills.
